Oh sure.

What I have noticed recently is more... that when any two sides of an argument start to directly interact, they seem to start by positing thier 'opponent' as an extremist (true or not) and then exaggerate thier own position in the opposite direction... while quite unself-consciously assuring everyone that they are quite the moderate. The longer this goes on, the further to the extremes both sides actually get...

But of course, you are also quite correct to note that the media always goes for the 'best' drama:-)

The extremists have always been around, the problem is that the media likes a good knock down drag out brawl, so only the extremists get airtime. Pretty soon everyone starts seeing everyone else as an extremist (I know I'm generally considered a fundamentalist extremist despite the absurdity of applying that label to a Catholic).

Hi John,

I have to say that I am a big fan of Dawkins, the biologist, but I was... disappointed... when i saw that he had jumped on this bandwagon.

It appears to me, that this is another of sveral cases I have identified lately, where an issue has been reduced to two, polar extremes with all of us real people 'left out' in the middle.

The Christian Fundamentalist crowd has become so outspoken and extreme that now non-religious folks are feeling... 'under attack,' so eventually you get a Sam Harris, or unfortunately a Richard Dawkins, stepping up 'in defense,' but they respond to this fundamentalism with fundamentalism of thier own and pretty soon, both sides have become so radical that its quite absurd. And that much harder to find any sort of shared middle ground.

Sad, really, but seeming to become more and more comman (on more and more issues) in recent years...
