    2. Frankly Eric did all of us a favor with his column, whether or not he intended to. The main arguement of the ‘lynch Acton Gordon for publishing the Mohammed cartoons’ crowd goes something like this: it’s racist/Islamophobic/etc to publish stuff that denigrates Islam and it would never have happened if it were the beliefs of the evil Christian majority being attacked. So what we have here is a Grade A Prime example of *gasp* anti-Christian stuff in the DI. Well, apparently Gordon got canned yesterday for his alleged transgressions (sorry, but I’m not buying the official story that two people ninja-hacked the DI’s op-ed page and no one else was involved, and that the problem was in in how the decision was made), still not a peep from the board on this. I love the DI columnists but I am thuroughly disgusted with the blatant hypocrisy on the part of the publisher. Apparently it really is okay to lampoon or offend a religion, culture, or ethnic group…provided you pick the right one.

In case I’m not being totally clear here, I’m not saying Eric’s column was bad and he should be censured. Quite the contrary: op-ed pages should be able to print more or less whatever they want, even if it happens to offend some people. That’s why they call them OPINION pages. Personally I find Eric’s columns over-the-top and highly amusing, though I suspect he’s often trolling for a reaction.

I miss the bygone era when communication was governed by the arcane mantra “If it upsets you, don’t look at it. If it keeps upsetting you, just don’t buy their product anymore.” Nowadays everyone’s so obsessed with being PC and not hurting anyone’s feelings that about the only decent in-depth coverage of anything you can find in the old-guard media anymore has to do with the antics of a few braindead Hollywood celebrities. “The Mainstream Media” has recently been publicly wondering why it is that so many people are starting to get all their news from independent and Internet sources rather than established sources. Well, bullshit like this is the answer.

P.S. I can’t believe I’ve posted on two blog sites in as many weeks, but email newsletters keep linking me to the blogosphere lately so eh.
