Columns and Commentary by John Bambenek

Conservative != Republican ; Republican != Conservative

Some people seem to have this mixed up. Yes, I’m a conservative. Yes, I tend to vote Republican. Republicans tend to be nominally conservative. (I find it funny about these comments about a theocracy, people making them have no idea what one is considering the policies put forward by the GOP). But, to be ecumenical here, as James Carville said “The purpose of a political party is to win elections.”. Sure, the Republicans have some ideas that they put forward and they tend to be conservative, but in the end, they are a political party, conservativism is a political philosophy. If the Republicans decided to advocate communism, I’d cease voting for them.

In short, not every conservative is a mindless straight-ballot voter. For more of my opinions on this, read my open letter to the IL GOP.
